Pesta Rumbia 2011 - Kuala Penyu

Seeing that Pesta Rumbia will be celebrated from today till 10 July 2011 in Kuala Penyu, I thought I dedicate the following video to all the Dusun Tatana out there and also in honour of my Dusun Tatana heritage.

Take special notice of the Tatana's traditional war dance called Bakanjar.

I'd like to think that we have our own fighting style :) . Apparently from what I've gleaned so far, the Dusun Lotud also have tarin Bakanjar, no surprise there. However, apparently the Dayaks in Kalimantan also has tarian Bakanjar??? The Lotud Dusuns have a legend about how they defeated the Brunei Pengiran and his warrior. They castrated all of them. Our history "books" say that Sarawak was the last to be "tamed" by the British, I'm beginning to think that is not true.

Thanks Justin for posting this. I've only heard this song once before. Although I don't understand it, I can really appreciate the stylistic beauty of the lyrics...it's so poetic :)

Hi Justin,
I don't understand most of the words but the dance is very interesting. I remember my late grandma taught me a song for a childish game we all love to play:

May man dai, kapitan aduk-aduk,
Aduk-aduk mansiam,
mansiam mantalanan,
mantalanan di katup,
katup songula ula
tu ka ro!

I don't know if that is the correct spelling or words (as I don't have a clue of their meaning). I wonder if that is a Dusun Tatana language? My grandma told me that was taught to her by her grandma (she was raised by her grandma, her own mother died giving birth to a stillbirth baby).

Any idea?

Unfortunately I don't speak Tatana/Dusun :P. We were never taught when we're young. If not for my Chinese grandmother, we wouldn't even know how to speak in Chinese also. My dad, who was a chinese, for reason only he knew, decided that we only speak Melayu. So thanks to my Po Po, at least I picked up one language of my heritage. If not, like your lupa diri friend, I also call myself melayu hehehe..

But despair you not, I shall ask one of my Dusun relatives to look into this. For some reason, I have the impression that you are Dusun Ranau? Am I correct with my assumption?

lol. u r not a 'lupa diri' lah. What to do, u were never been taught that language. I speak Malay at home. My parents never spoke a word of Dusun language to us when we were growing up. Only recently I started to speak in Dusun with my father. I picked up my Dusun from my grandparents and friends at school. Susah bah kalau tidak pandai cakap Dusun kalau sek di Tambunan. Kawan-kawan selalu ejek n umpat in Dusun. Terus automatik pandai cakap Dusun. hehe

I am Dusun Tambunan + Ranau. Mum from ranau, dad from Tambunan. My parents are separated (and sadly now estranged), so I spent equal time in both districts. I guess my Dusun is somewhat mixed between those 2 districts. My accents depends on where I am and who I speak to. It's kind of funny, but yeah, I can switch my accents just like that. I do speak Rungus, Murut and a little Bajau, but not Dusun Tatana. Somehow their language is quite different from my Dusun.

Hi Gunaqz, I am from KP and the lyric to that song is not in Tatana. I think I may have known the tatana version of the song when I was a kid in KP but its been many years since and I am afraid mogumu no noliwan ku (I have forgotten much!) I envy you for being able to speak in the other dialects as well. I wish I could.

Justin, thank you for putting up the youtube video. The katam katam scene gave me the giggles this morning!

My cousins & uncle perform Bakanjar suring my wedding. In the vid, macam rambang ja durang attack each other.. LOL!

Btw, I thought it is Tatana.. My cousins used to sing it during a bon-fire session when we were in the kampung.... Isnt it about a bird?? :) lol!
