Two Al-Islam journalists went undercover to investigate a church. They participated in the Catholic Mass and actually received the Holy Communion i.e. they accepted the Host which represents the body of Christ. The Host is just a piece of wafer but once consecrated, it becomes a Holy item. Following me so far? You can't expect to grasp the theology in one sitting.
The two journalists went back and write their report. In it, they admitted that they spit the host out after they taken it, probably not in sight of the congregation. Someone saw the report and his jaw probably dropped to the floor when he found out what these reporters did.
Still don't get what the big deal is?
The Host is a Holy item. It represents the body of Christ and Catholics believe that when they receive the Host, they are actually receiving the body of Christ. That's faith.
So these reporters have committed SACRILEGE by DESECRATING the HOST. The Catholics believe that desecrating the Host is a Mortal Sin and is reputed to be the worst of all sacrileges. I repeat, THE WORST OF ALL SACRILEGES.
If Christians have Jihad, they would declare Jihad right away. Do you see now the severity of these journalists' transgression?
As far as I know, Catholic churches do not bar people of other faith to participate or observe their Mass, inside the church premise. The religion does not forbid it. However, only BAPTIZED Catholics can receive the Holy Communion.
The two journalists could have just walked in and observe the mass and no one would have harassed them. If the priest found out that they were there, he would probably just acknowledged their presence to the congregation and welcome them. And if the 2 are spotted joining the queue to receive the Holy Communion, the Wardens (people who assist in the Mass, some sort of traffic cop) would just explain to them that the Holy Communion is just for the baptized Catholics. If this had happened, this whole unpleasant situation could have been averted.
But they were undercover. Well, next time, do some research before you go into the 'enemy's ' den.
I like to think that they were just ignorant. They probably saw everyone queuing so they just joined to mix with the crowd, to stay inconspicuous, by the time they realized it, they were standing infront of the priest and the priest handed over the Host to them. Monkey see, monkey do, they just followed what everyone was doing. They probably had the Host in their hands, did not want to put it in their mouth and thinking that they would just dispose of it outside but the wardens observing the whole process, stopped them as they were about to walk away and made them consume the Host.
During Holy Communion, wardens will be stationed near the priests. Their job is to ensure that the Host is consumed immediately. They will not allow anyone to bring the Host back to their pews. Why? It was not always this way but along the way, some people who were involved in Satanic Cult or deviants, received the Host but did not consume it. They brought it home and used it as part of their satanic or deviant rituals.
I hope I have done my part to educate our Non-Christian friends and enlighten you why the Catholics are incensed. The actions of these two journalists were akin to someone drawing the likeness of Prophet Mohammed in a sacrileges manner. Tolerance and respect go both ways.
On a personal note, I would like to see this matter settled amicably. Not every Muslim agrees with their action as evident from the blog of one Art Harun. I am heartened to see that he is voicing out ferociously for the Christians but I pray everyone can be level headed about this.
